Brigitta Bihari On July 22, Morocco and the United States co-hosted The Group of Friends on Artificial Intelligence for Sustainable Development’s event at the United Nations headquarters in New York. The conference spotlighted Africa’s potential to leverage artificial intelligence (AI) for sustainable development. The event themed “Artificial Intelligence: An Exponential Opportunity for Sustainable Development in Africa” and highlighted Morocco’s commitment to “South-South cooperation” and its vision for AI as a driver of progress on the continent.
The emphasis on partnerships reflects a crucial aspect of Africa’s AI journey. While the continent boasts a young, tech-savvy population and a growing number of AI startups, significant challenges still need to be solved in infrastructure, research capacity, and regulatory frameworks.
Partnerships with developed countries like the US and collaboration between African nations are seen as essential to bridging these gaps.
